A/T tires are designed to balance highway comfort with off-road capability, featuring tighter tread blocks and lots of siping (tiny slits in the tread blocks) to grip wet pavement and packed snow. They excel during commutes in heavy Portland rain, on gravel logging roads, and on winter trips up to Mount Hood, but have trouble ejecting thick mud quickly due to their tighter tread pattern. The Nitto Ridge Grappler tire, while technically a “hybrid” tire, is a particularly excellent tire choice, offering the aggressive sidewall styling of an M/T, but maintaining the quieter highway ride and variable pitch tread pattern of an A/T.

M/T tires are built with massive voids between large tread blocks, acting like a paddle to constantly dig into loose terrain and eject mud as the tire spins. However, their lower surface area touching the road means longer braking distance on wet pavement, They are also notoriously loud on the highway and wear out faster compared to A/Ts. A great example of M/T tire capability is the Toyo Open Country M/T, known for bomb-proof durability and extreme off-road traction. It’s the gold standard for dedicated Oregon trail rigs that need to survive sharp rocks and deep sludge.
